The Power To Prevent Tooth Decay

They say that knowledge is power and knowing what causes tooth decay can give you the power to prevent cavities!checkup

Tooth decay destroys both the enamel and inside dentin layer of the tooth. Tooth decay is caused by the combination of high carbohydrate foods and oral bacteria. We have many different kinds of bacteria living in our mouths, some are good and some are bad and cause tooth decay. While we have great filling options for restoring teeth damaged by decay, prevention is the best option of all!

When we eat things like breads, soda, candy or fruits there are small amounts of these sugars and starches left on our teeth. The oral bacteria digest these foods and turn them into acids. The bacteria, acid, food debris and saliva form a biofilm called plaque which is very sticky. The plaque contains acids that break down the enamel on surface of the tooth and create cavities.

Prevent Tooth Decay

We know how tooth decay begins and we know how to prevent it:

  • Brush at least twice each day with fluoride toothpaste
  • It is especially important to brush before bed but don’t rinse the fluoride off your teeth
  • Floss, every single day
  • Avoid carbohydrate heavy foods like crackers, candy and pretzels which stick to the tooth surface
  • Drink tap water that contains fluoride
  • Visit the dentist every six months for cleanings and checkups

We all have times that we snack on something sugary and then can’t brush out teeth – chew instead! Research has shown that sugarless chewing gum containing xylitol stops the growth of the bacteria that cause tooth decay!
